Curiosities: How does the DOT test new paving? University Communications madison.com |  Posted: Sunday, May 29, 2011 3:15 pm

Q: I hear University Avenue may need repaving. Don't they test asphalt before they pave?

A: The problem may have been detected shortly after paving, says Hussain Bahia, a paving expert and professor of civil and environmental engineering at UW-Madison.

Bahia notes that the state Department of Transportation requires extensive testing of asphalt when paving state highways, and the city of Madison follows the same standards.

"These things are done in a very engineered way, and the DOT has very good, very clear specifications, but things do happen," says Bahia.

The Rabine Group recently hosted an educational seminar attended by Property Managers at NAI Hiffman. The event took place last April 19, 2011 in Schaumburg, Illinois.  Rabine Paving’s Ryan Laughlin and UltraLot Paving Systems’ Scott Haislip, two of the company’s most experienced engineers, presented information on the benefits of asphalt and concrete paving. During the Q&A Session, one of the interesting questions raised was regarding how Property Managers should plan for a volatile market considering fluctuations in market pricing for fuel and asphalt products.

Ryan explained, “The price of asphalt paving products isn’t directly correlated to the price of gasoline but there is a strong relationship between the two. As the price of gasoline has steadily risen during the last 4 months, asphalt cement has followed in suit. Rabine Paving would advise that if you have currently available funds or expect to have funds available, secure proposals as soon as possible from your paving contractors. These...

EZ Street Canada develops asphalt mix for use in extreme cold PETER KENTER correspondent Hot mix is often the asphalt of choice for paving projects, but EZ Street Canada is aiming to take a bite out of the market with a cold asphalt paving mix that can be applied without heating at temperatures ranging from minus 18C to 38C. The product, developed in Florida by the EZ Street parent company, employs advanced polymers that allow the material to be stored indefinitely and applied without additional preparation under a wide range of weather conditions. Chris Hunt, one of the founding partners of EZ Street Canada, says he first heard about the product after he spent 10 Euros to register the web name EZ.ST in the island nation of Sao Tomé on a whim. “It was a great web address, but I didn’t really need it, so I decided to contact anyone with a similar business name who might want to take it over,” he says. “Lars Seagren, who founded EZ Street, was the only one to respond, and he told me he’d just been getting...

Waterloo debates whether asphalt, concrete is best street optionBy TIM JAMISON, tim.jamison@wcfcourier.com wcfcourier.com | Posted: Sunday, February 20, 2011 9:00 pm

WATERLOO, Iowa --- City leaders are trying to determine whether asphalt or concrete provides the most bang for their street paving bucks.

Mayor Buck Clark has organized a series of City Council work sessions this month to gather information on both options and determine which material should be used for the roughly $4 million in street reconstruction projects the city awards annually with local option sales tax revenue.

"I was trying to get this done when I was (a councilman) because I never quite understood why we never get bids from concrete contractors," Clark said. "I want to confirm that what we are doing in Waterloo in reconstructing our streets was the right thing."

Representatives of the Iowa Concrete Paving Association made their pitch Monday, while their counterparts from the Asphalt Paving Association...

MANSFIELD -- Community leader and philanthropist Richard R. "Dick" Stander Sr., 92, died Feb. 4 at a Florida hospital.
He died after a short illness.

Stander was among the founders of The Ohio State University-Mansfield. He and his father, Carl, donated land for part of the campus, now shared with North Central State College. In recent years, he donated more than 30 wooded acres for academic purposes, including an ecology research site. The local OSU-Mansfield campus named Stander Plaza for him.

Stander earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from The Ohio State University in 1940.

In 2005, Stander received the university's Distinguished Service Award at summer commencement.

John Riedl, a former dean and director of OSU-Mansfield, said Stander was a key supporter of the local campus.

"He was delighted to learn we were starting the first year of the engineering program here, and he had toured the laboratory," he said. "He was very, very pleased that was happening."

Paving the Way for California's Asphalt Consumers The California asphalt paving industry is ever-changing and in order to provide the best services, asphalt paving companies are turning to new technologies to stay ahead of the competition. Asphalt technology in California has been changing since the creation of Hot Mix Asphalt and will continue to change as time permits. Asphalt rubber pavement was introduced in 1991, which shocked many industry experts. Asphalt rubber pavement seemed promising to those in the industry who were ready for a change. On the other end of the spectrum were industry experts who thought that the world wasn't ready for such technologies to be implemented. In Tom Kuennens article titled, "Asphalt Rubber Makes a Quiet Comeback" shown in Better Roads Magazine, he describes rubber asphalt as, "a chemically reacted mix of liquid asphalt binder with 15 to 22% crumb rubber. The rubber is obtained from reclaimed tires, and added to liquid asphalt. It's reacted at elevated temperatures prior to being mixed with aggregate." There are two types of asphalt rubber (wet process) are used in California. Type A- contains rubber only from ground tires, and Type B contains rubber from both ground tires and natural rubber. Caltrans seems to favor Type B binders because they have better resistance to reflection cracking and provide better stability. Rubber pavement disappeared for a few years due an increase in asphalt pavement technologies and a decrease in existing pavement costs associated with this form of material. Until recently, a number of important developments have helped propel asphalt rubber pavement to its current level of acceptance, including new tire-shredding technologies and the establishment of tire recycling facilities in every part of the United States.

The word asphalt conjures thoughts of one color — black. Gleaming, stinking, smoldering black.

But what about green?

Asphalt, a petroleum-based product, has long been considered an environmental foe. Production typically occurs around 300 degrees, and when heated it releases toxic fumes and pollutants.
